It comes as no surprise that I bake. A lot. I love to make all kinds of goodies, but I have a special place in my heart for cozy, comfort bakes. There’s something magical and comforting about how some homemade treats bring warmth and joy into our kitchens. Just the smell of something baking in the oven can make a house feel like a home. And the warmth from the oven is especially welcome during colder months.

What each of us would put into the category of comfort baking will vary. There are those treats with wide appeal, like chocolate chip cookies and banana bread. And then there are special treats that also have a good dose of nostalgia to make them feel cozy. For me, those are often recipes like oatmeal cream pies and chess pie that I associate with my mother and grandmother. Think about what you might bake that brings back fond memories. Recreating these recipes can be a bridge to past joys and a way to bring cherished traditions into the present.

You’ve likely seen humorous references to “stress baking,” but baking can definitely be a form of self-care. It can serve as a mindful activity to reduce stress. And, of course, there’s the satisfaction of the outcomes of your efforts that you can enjoy and share with others.

I hope you’ll take the time to bake something delicious, whether it’s from this list or from your own collection of comfort food recipes. Share your favorite comfort bake recipes and the stories behind your favorite comfort foods in the comments section below. I’d love to hear about them!

Tips for Perfect Comfort Bakes Every Time

  • Control your environment. I know that’s easier said than done on many days, but being comfortable will go a long way toward your enjoyment of baking. Silence your phone and turn on some of your favorite music
  • Take your time. Enjoy the process of baking something from scratch.
  • Keep it simple. If you’re baking for comfort, you’re more likely to enjoy a simple recipe than a multi-step project. Go with a tried and true favorite or a new recipe that seems well within your baking skills.
  • Know your recipe. Read all the way through the recipe at least once so you know what all you need and what your timeframe is.
  • Review the basics. Take a look at my Baking Tips for Beginners, especially if you’re new to baking or it’s been a while since you baked.
  • Have fun! Be mindful of your baking tasks and enjoy the process.
  • Share the love. After your baking is done, share with family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, or any one who would enjoy a homemade treat. That sense of community is pretty cozy, too.
