What You’ll Need

See the recipe card below for ingredient quantities and full instructions.

  • Cream cheese – Let this come to room temperature for easier mixing and a smoother texture for your dip. Use full-fat cream cheese that comes in blocks, not the whipped kind in a tub.
  • Peanut butter – Use regular peanut butter, not a natural variety.
  • Milk – I usually use whole milk, but any kind you have on hand will work.
  • Vanilla extract
  • Confectioners’ sugar – Also labeled as powdered sugar, icing sugar, or 10X sugar. If yours is especially lumpy, sift it first for a smoother dip texture.
  • Peanut butter cups – I prefer starting with mini peanut butter cups, but the regular size is fine, too. Either way, chop them into bite-size pieces.

How to Make Peanut Butter Cup Dip

  • Start mixing. Beat the cream cheese, peanut butter, 1 tablespoon of the milk, and vanilla until smooth. Add more of the remaining milk if needed.
  • Add the sugar. Gradually add the confectioners’ sugar, mixing until combined.
  • Finish mixing. Fold the peanut butter cups into the mixture.
  • Chill. Refrigerate for at least an hour before serving.

Tips for Success

  • Use room temperature cream cheese. It will mix more easily and give your peanut butter dip a smoother texture.
  • Adjust the consistency. If the dip seems too thick after mixing, you can add a bit more milk, a teaspoon at a time, until it reaches the desired consistency. If it’s too thin, a little more confectioners’ sugar can help thicken it up.
  • Chop the peanut butter cups. I like to start with mini peanut butter cups and chop them into bite-size pieces. The smaller pieces will mix more easily and make the dip easier to serve and scoop.

Variations

  • Change the add-in. For something a bit different, try substituting mini chocolate chips, pretzel pieces, chopped peanuts, or another add-in that sounds like a good pairing with this peanut butter dip.
  • Keep it simple. You can omit the peanut butter cups altogether for a simpler dip that focuses on the peanut butter flavor.
  • Add a swirl. Gently swirl a bit of Nutella or a thick caramel sauce into the dip for a fun flavor contrast.

Serving Suggestions

There are so many options for what to serve with peanut butter cup. Here are some of my favorite pairings:

  • Cookies: Graham crackers (plain, chocolate, or cinnamon), vanilla wafers, shortbread, wafer cookies, chocolate sandwich cookies, animal crackers, chocolate wafers
  • Fruit: Apple slices, strawberries, banana slices
  • Salty dippers: Pretzel rods or pretzel thins, sturdy potato chips (like kettle chips), buttery crackers (like Ritz or Club), pita chips

How to Store

  • Refrigerator: Store the dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 3 days. You’ll likely need to give it a good stir before serving. If necessary, let it sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes to let it soften for easier dipping.
  • Freezer: This dip is best enjoyed fresh or refrigerated. Freezing isn’t recommended, as the texture may change once thawed, becoming grainy or less smooth.
