Combine the berries, sugar, vanilla, and cornstarch. Transfer to a baker with about a 1/2 quart capacity or to individual ramekins. Set aside while you make the topping.
To make the topping:
Combine the flour, brown sugar, and salt.
Add the cream cheese, and mix with a fork or your fingers until combined. (Mixture will be slightly sticky.)
Drop the topping mixture in small amounts over the top of the filing. If you like, sprinkle the top with sanding sugar.
Bake 25 to 30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
