Whisk together the flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt.

Start mixing wet ingredients

Beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, then mix in each egg.

Add the dry ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Stir in vanilla and hot water.

Divide the batter evenly between the pans, and bake  35-40 minutes. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out clean.

Place the pans on wire racks for 10 minutes before flipping the cakes onto a rack to cool completely.
